Weekly Flu Update


Five more flu-related deaths were reported in Arkansas last week, bringing the death toll from the current flu season to 215. The most recent deaths included those of two people age 65 or older, one person between the ages of 45 and 64 and two people ages 25 to 44. The other deaths this flu season include those of five children or teenagers under age 19, 12 people age 25 to 44, 34 people age 45 to 64 and 159 people who were 65 or older.

According to the latest weekly influenza report, since October 1st, over 53,000 positive influenza tests have been reported by health care providers. Last week, 30 of the state’s 75 counties reported influenza cases. The majority of reports in our listening area came from Cleburne, Faulkner, Jackson, Lonoke, Pulaski, and White Counties.

The average school absenteeism rate last week was 6.0 percent among public schools.

Among the influenza-related deaths reported in Arkansas this flu season, 210 are among adult persons and five are pediatric deaths. The Center for Disease Control has reported a total of 142 pediatric deaths nationwide this season.

Since October 1st, 59 facilities including 47 nursing homes have reported influenza outbreaks.
