Shooting Victim Identified

James Newman

Arkansas State Police are investigating a shooting incident involving a White County deputy. Sheriff’s officials say at around 7:18pm Saturday night, White County 911 received a call of possible shots fired from two separate residences in the 400 block of Sidon Road.

The victim is identified as 69-year old James Newman, of Rosebud.

During the incident, the deputy made repeated requests for the suspect to put down his rifle; however, Newman refused the orders to put his weapon down and began approaching the deputy and then pointed his rifle at the deputy. The deputy deployed his weapon and the suspect was shot. Newman was transported to Unity Health Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

Special Agents with the Arkansas State Police are currently conducting an investigation and  upon completion of the investigation, state police special agents will submit an investigative file to the White County prosecuting attorney for consideration to determine whether use of deadly force by a law enforcement officer was justified as defined by state laws.  As per policy, the deputy has been placed on administrative leave.
