Police budget request drops $25,000 cut despite desire to add full-time officer as SRO

A budget proposal of $3,734,917.54 for the Searcy Police Department in 2020 made at the Committee of the Whole meeting earlier this month was around a $25,000 drop from the department’s initial proposal despite Police Chief Steve Hernandez wanting to hire one full-time officer to work as a school resource officer.

Currently, he said, he is pulling an officer off the street to work in one of the Searcy schools. That officer is roaming the three elementary schools while the high school, junior high and middle school each have their own SRO.
