New Year, New Laws

Arkansas Legislature

There are at least 40 new laws and amendments on the books as of Monday morning with most of the laws dealing with financial and education issues around the state.

Among the new laws: the military retirement income tax cut. It provides tax relief for the state’s 22,000 veterans or their surviving spouses or children.

School buses bought new or leased after January 1st to have seat belts under one condition. Ten percent of registered voters in a school district must sign a petition.

One new law threatens doctors with fines and prison time if they perform abortions based solely on whether the parents want to have a girl or boy.

And another law requires political action committees, among others, to submit their campaign finance information electronically in most cases.   MORE
