Monument Destroyer Acquitted

Michael Reed

The man accused of toppling the first Ten Commandments monument on state Capitol grounds last year has been acquitted by reason of mental disease.

Facing one count of first-degree criminal mischief, 33-year old Michael Tate Reed II, of Van Buren, appeared Thursday morning before Pulaski County Circuit Judge Chris Piazza for a status hearing.

Piazza ruled that Reed must return to the State Hospital in Little Rock for additional evaluations that could lead to his release. He has been held in the state hospital since late last year after Piazza ruled he wasn’t fit to proceed to trial.

The finding that Reed is innocent by reason of mental disease does not mean that he will be released immediately. He will remain in state custody for at least the next five years.
