Hardin University ‘It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play’

The Harding University theatre department will present Joe Landry’s “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play” in the Ulrey Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. Dec. 6-8 with an additional matinee at 2 p.m. on Dec. 8. The show is directed by Dr. Steve Frye, professor and chair of the theatre department.

“This is a new take on a great classic,” said Frye. “As part of the Searcy Holiday of Lights Festival, we are presenting a live radio play of the annual classic, ‘It’s a Wonderful Life.’ The actors present the holiday magic at the microphones with live sound effects made by Foley artists, just as they did in 1946.”

The play is based on the classic holiday movie with a clever twist thrown in: the story is staged as a live radio broadcast. “It’s a Wonderful Life” is about the life of George Bailey, a generous and well-meaning man who has become too downcast and tired to continue living. It will take help from a lovable angel to show George what life would be like if he wasn’t born for George to have a change of heart and understand the true spirit of the holidays.

“‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ reminds each of us that our lives matter in so many ways and that love and friendship make us rich,” said Frye.
